Security Clearances for Contractors
Everything you need to know about obtaining and maintaining a security clearance.
Types of Security Clearances
Most overseas contractor positions require a U.S. government security clearance. The three main levels are:
- Confidential: The lowest level, providing access to information that could cause damage to national security if disclosed.
- Secret: The most common clearance level for contractor positions. Required for the majority of OCONUS logistics, security, and IT roles.
- Top Secret (TS) / SCI: Required for intelligence, cyber, and sensitive operations roles. Involves a more thorough background investigation.
How to Get a Clearance
You cannot apply for a security clearance on your own — it must be sponsored by a cleared employer. Once you receive a conditional job offer, your employer will initiate the process. You'll complete an SF-86 form (eQIP) and undergo a background investigation.
Maintaining Your Clearance
Clearances are periodically reviewed. Secret clearances are reinvestigated every 10 years, and TS clearances every 5 years. Maintaining good financial standing, avoiding foreign contacts, and reporting any issues promptly are key to keeping your clearance active.
Already Have a Clearance?
Having an active clearance dramatically increases your hiring speed and salary potential. Many contractors with active clearances receive offers within days of applying.
